Application of infrared thermography to the non-destructive testing of concrete and masonry bridges

چکیده
Within recent years there has been an increase in the use of NDT methods to detect defects and anomalies in various civil engineering structures. Infrared thermography, which has been successfully used in the USA in civil engineering applications, is being increasingly applied in the UK as an NDT technique. For example, the technique is now included in the Building Regulations for the assessment of thermal insulation for all new non-domestic buildings from April 2002. One of the perceived limitations of infrared thermography is that in temperate climates it is too cold to use this technique since there is rarely the extreme solar exposure that has enabled the successful use of thermography to detect render debonding and concrete spalling utilising solar heating. However, with the advancements in modern technology it is now possible to detect smaller changes in temperature (down to 0.08 8C). This paper shows that even with the low ambient temperatures experienced in Europe it is possible to use infrared thermography to identify correctly known areas of delamination in a concrete bridge structure and also to investigate the internal structure of a masonry bridge. q 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

DETECTING DEFECTS in REINFORCED CONCRETE USING the METHOD of INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY
This paper presents a method for detecting defects in reinforced concrete structures by using the method of active infrared (IR) thermography. Non-destructive testing using infrared (IR) thermography consists of thermal stimulation of the object of interest and monitoring of the surface temperature variation during the transient cooling or heating process. The paper includes short descriptions ...
متن کاملInfrared Thermography for Temperature Measurement and Non-Destructive Testing
The intensity of the infrared radiation emitted by objects is mainly a function of their temperature. In infrared thermography, this feature is used for multiple purposes: as a health indicator in medical applications, as a sign of malfunction in mechanical and electrical maintenance or as an indicator of heat loss in buildings. This paper presents a review of infrared thermography especially f...

The contribution deals with state of the art non-destructive testing method – active infrared thermography. The method can be used for revealing of defects and inhomogenities inside the bodies, e.g. bubbles and cracks in materials, which can have crucial importance from the point of view of their physical-mechanical properties. Goal of the research is theoretical evaluation of the performance o...
متن کاملActive Infrared Thermography Technique for the Non Destructive Testing of Composite Material
Delamination is one of the most common defects in laminate composite materials. To detect delaminations, different non-destructive test methods such as infrared thermography methods are currently widespread for non-destructive inspection, recommended for evaluating composite materials mostly in the active variant. The principle behind infrared thermography consists in highlighting the relevant ...

The purpose of this paper is to present a multi-sensor approach to the detection and inspection of steel bars in reinforced concrete structures. In connection with our past experience related to non-destructive testing of different materials, we propose using two potentially effective methods: active infrared thermography with microwave excitation and the eddy current technique. In this article...
